LABIAPLASTY

TREATMENT

LABIAPLASTY

Labiaplasty is surgery that aims to improve the overall shape and size of the labia minora / majora. Ladies’ genitals come in all shapes and sizes, all of which are perfectly normal. That said, some women may feel dissatisfied with their labia in particular if the labia minora (inner lips) protrude outside of the labia majora (outer lips) causing discomfort during exercise, when wearing tight clothing, during sexual intercourse or they may have dissatisfaction with the overall aesthetic. This is where labiaplasty may be a suitable course of action.

Labiaplasty (also known as labia reduction surgery) can be performed in a couple of ways if the lips are long, large or asymmetrical. The typical techniques will be to reduce the size of the labia by way of removing the excess tissue using a straight incision, or by cutting a v shape to reduce the overall length. Using the V shape removal, there is no scarring along the edge of the labia which some feel results in a more pleasing aesthetic.

At REAL, labiaplasty is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT LABIAPLASTY

  • Are there any risks associated with labiaplasty?

There is likely to be some swelling, bruising, tenderness and general discomfort following labiaplasty which can be managed with pain relief. This should start to ease in the days following surgery. There is a small risk of infection following any surgical procedure, but your specialist at REAL will furnish you with an appropriate post surgery care pack.

  • Is there any downtime associated with labiaplasty?

You can typically allow around 1-2 weeks to recover from labiaplasty. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving although light everyday activities can resume within a couple of days. You should not resume activities such as sexual intercourse, going to the gym or sports for around 6 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
