CATARACT TREATMENT

Cataracts are the natural clouding of the lens inside our eyes. Cataracts develop as we get older and affect our vision. They will affect most of us in our life and are considered a normal part of ageing. Common complaints from cataracts include decreased vision, blurry vision and glare, especially around lights at night. Colour can also be affected as the blue light is absorbed by the cataract. Cataracts develop slowly over time, and when the decreased vision caused by the cataract starts to affect your life, this is the time to consider surgery.

Treatment for removing a cataract is done surgically and involves replacing the cloudy lens with an artificial one (intraocular lens). The new lens is placed where the natural lens once sat, and will remain there permanently. We normally advise people to have surgery in one eye, and when that eye has settled, the same procedure can be performed in the other eye.

Our Ophthalmology treatments are usually carried out under local anesthetic. Eye drops remove any pain, so during the procedure you should simply feel a little pressure. If you are feeling a little nervous, sedation can be offered which makes the procedure less worrying. The good news is that cataract treatment is usually safe and effective. Over 98% of people were happy following their surgery on the last national survey. Speak to us about our premium lenses – they can help you achieve great vision in the distance and for nearer tasks, such as computer use.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CATARACT TREATMENT

  • Is surgery my only option?

Cataracts is a condition where drops and other medication have not proven to make a significant difference. The condition characteristically worsens over time, which can also mean that activities such as reading and driving can become more difficult over time as your eyesight weakens. You can discuss your options with one of REAL’S expert doctors at a confidential consultation, who will offer full support throughout the treatment process.

  • What are the side effects of this treatment?

After surgery you will find that you can see things in focus, colours will be more defined and your eyes are less sensitive to bright lights and / or glare. Results may take a few days to fully develop, and while you are recovering the following side effects may be experienced: gritty eyes, watery eyes, red / bloodshot eyes and blurred vision.
