BREAST AUGMENTATION

TREATMENT

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Small breasts may be hereditary, or as a result of weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding, as well as a loss of volume due to the natural process of ageing. When small or less shapely breasts affect a woman’s self-esteem or confidence, she may seek breast enlargement surgery (breast augmentation) to increase the size and / or enhance the shape of the breasts.

Here at REAL, a pre-operative assessment will be carried out, during which time we will discuss your desired results as well as your reasons for seeking breast augmentation so that we can advise the correct procedure for you.

On the day of surgery, we will answer any last minute questions you may have prior to your operation, to ensure you are fully ready to go ahead with your procedure. The procedure begins by marking the breasts which will indicate incision points. Typically, incisions will be made in one of three main areas to help minimise the risk of visible scarring; these points are; in the crease where the breast meets the chest (inframammary crease), around the areola if necessary (periareolar), and in the armpit (transaxillary). A pocket will be created and the implant will then be placed either in front of, or behind the chest muscle before the wound is closed and dressings are applied.

Our breast augmentation treatments are carried out under general anaesthetic. Here at REAL we use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT BREAST AUGMENTATION

  • What are the risks associated with Breast Augmentation surgery?

Common side effects of breast augmentation surgery include: swelling, bruising, discomfort at the site of healing, tenderness and temporary numbness can sometimes occur. Less common side effects can include; infection, bleeding, breast asymmetry, implant rupture and capsular contracture (scarring that constricts the implant). It is important to note that there are also risks associated with any operative procedure. We will discuss these with you in full at your pre-operative consultation.

  • Is there any downtime associated with breast augmentation surgery?

You can typically allow it to take up to two weeks to ‘heal’ from breast augmentation surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not travel abroad for at least 3 weeks post surgery, and should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for at least 12 weeks post surgery.
