OTOPLASTY

Our ears tend to be fully developed by the age of 5 and having asymmetric, large or protruding ears can be a troublesome concern during childhood and adolescence which may lead to issues with social confidence. Surgery for protruding ears requires an incision to be made behind the ear removing some skin and if necessary, cartilage to reshape / reposition the ear and sealing the wound with stitches. Sutures may also be used to help bring the ear closer to the head, stabilising protruding ears.

At REAL, otoplasty is carried out under local, or general anaesthetic. For general anaesthetic, we use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.
