OTOPLASTY

TREATMENT

OTOPLASTY

Otoplasty (also known as pinnaplasty) is a surgical procedure that aims to reposition or improve the shape of the ears. There are a number of concerns that can lead to a person seeking otoplasty, but primarily this is due to asymmetrical or protruding ears. Just like our other facial features, the shape and size of our eyes is largely due to genetics.

Our ears tend to be fully developed by the age of 5 and having asymmetric, large or protruding ears can be a troublesome concern during childhood and adolescence which may lead to issues with social confidence. Surgery for protruding ears requires an incision to be made behind the ear removing some skin and if necessary, cartilage to reshape / reposition the ear and sealing the wound with stitches. Sutures may also be used to help bring the ear closer to the head, stabilising protruding ears.

At REAL, otoplasty is carried out under local, or general anaesthetic. For general anaesthetic, we use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT OTOPLASTY

  • Are there any side effects or risks associated with otoplasty?

There will be some bruising and swelling that will occur following otoplasty, and this should settle relatively quickly. Depending on the technique used during your surgery, it may take a little longer (around 2-3 weeks) for the healing process to settle. Scarring is a common side effect of otoplasty, although here at REAL your surgeon will make incisions that will be specifically positioned to help minimise visible scarring. You may also experience a feeling of tightness post surgery that will ease over time. As with all surgery, there is a risk of infection, asymmetry, nerve damage and bleeding.

  • Is there any downtime associated with otoplasty?

You can typically allow around 2 weeks to fully recover from otoplasty. You are able to go to work in the weeks following your procedure, although you will be required to take it easy and taking some time off work is advised. You will also need to wear dressings and headband (certainly at night) for up to 4 weeks post surgery.
