ARM LIFT

TREATMENT

ARM LIFT

Arm lift surgery, known by the medical term Brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure to help improve the shape and tone of the upper arm by removing excess skin as well as localised fat.
This procedure is commonly requested when a person has lost a lot of weight resulting in excess skin, or due to the ageing process whereby the skin has started to lose elasticity and sagging skin on the underarm – or ‘bingo wings’ – have developed as a result.

Arm lift surgery involves the removal of sagging skin and localised fat deposits that hang down from the underside of the arm. This procedure will result in a tightened more toned appearance to the upper arm. It should be noted that the trade off to this is that there will be a scar left on the inner arm, although this will likely fade with time. During the brachioplasty procedure, incisions will be made along the arm, excess skin and fat deposits will be removed and the skin will be pulled taut and stitched. Depending on the technique used, an arm lift may involve incisions from the armpit a short way down the arm, or fully from the armpit to the elbow. The result will be a much improved aesthetic, and more toned shape.

At REAL, brachioplasty is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT ARM LIFT

  • Are there any risks associated with arm lift surgery?

There is likely to be some swelling, bruising, tenderness and discomfort following arm lift surgery which can be managed with pain relief. You will be required to wear a tight compression garment for some weeks post surgery which will aid healing and help reduce scarring.

  • Is there any downtime associated with arm lift surgery?

You can typically allow around 2 weeks to recover from arm lift surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for around 6 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.

You should also try to keep the arms elevated on cushions to help reduce swelling in the hands and wrists.
