FAT TRANSFER TO FACE

TREATMENT

FAT TRANSFER TO FACE

Many people look to improve the appearance of their overall facial profile, often enhancing certain areas of the face. A treatment is often requested when a person feels one or more of the features is lacking in the definition they desire. Common areas for this type of treatment to be performed include areas such as: the cheeks, lips and jawline which may naturally appear weaker than preferred. In other circumstances, ageing has caused a loss in volume which has led to flat cheeks, thin lips and / or sagging skin around the jaw.

Fat transfer to the face requires fatty deposits to be harvested from another area of the body, such as: the hips, buttocks, stomach or thighs. Therefore it is essential that the body has enough fat stores. The fatty tissue is extracted through a process called liposuction, whereby a cannula is inserted into the skin and moved around to loosen the fat. It is then sucked out in small amounts through an attached tube. The fat will need to be prepared before it is injected into the area of the face that requires additional volume.

Our treatments for the face and eyes are carried out under general anaesthetic. Here at REAL we use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT FAT TRANSFER TO FACE

  • Can fat transfer be performed on other areas of the body?

Fat transfer can be used to augment various areas of the face and body, including: breasts (inc. male breast area), hips, thighs and buttocks. This procedure can offer two types of results: enhancement of the chosen facial feature(s), and re-contouring of the place where fat was taken from.

  • Are there any side effects?

Swelling, redness, sensitivity and bruising are to be expected, both at the harvested site and at the transferred site. After effects are usually temporary and will take a few days to subside – although this may take a little longer where the liposuction part of the procedure was carried out. The final outcome will be visible after a few months when the fat has had time to graft.
