FACE LIFT

A face lift is a cosmetic procedure that aims to reverse the appearance of facial ageing as well as addressing sagging skin, jowls, and fallen brows. A surgical face lift can lift and tighten the skin whilst following the natural structure of the face for a natural looking, youthful result.
There are a number of techniques used in face lift surgery, including; SMAS PLICATION, SMAS FLAP (also known as DEEP PLANE), SMAS STACKING, CORSET PLATYSMAPLASTY and LATERAL PLATYSMA DISPLACEMENT.

All these techniques vary slightly to one another, but in all face lift surgery the skin is lifted off the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (a layer that wraps around the facial muscles and extends down to the muscles in the neck), the muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed then the overlying layer of skin discreetly stitched in place. Incisions are usually made following the creases around the ears so as to ensure that any scarring is as subtle as possible. A face lift is often performed alongside other facial surgeries such as a neck lift, brow lift and eyelid lift to give a balanced natural result. The appropriate technique will be chosen during your pre-operative assessment to ensure the most successful, natural outcome for your face.

At REAL, a face lift is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT FACE LIFT

  • Are there any side effects or risks associated with face lift surgery?

There will be some bruising and swelling that will occur following face lift surgery, and this should settle after a few weeks. Depending on the technique used during your surgery, it may take up to a few months for the healing process to settle. Scarring is a common side effect of face lift surgery, although here at REAL your surgeon will make incisions that will be specifically positioned to help minimise visible scarring. You may also experience a feeling of tightness post surgery that will ease over time as the skin relaxes. As with all surgery, there is a risk of infection, asymmetry, nerve damage and bleeding.

  • Is there any downtime associated with face lift surgery?

You can typically allow around 2 – 3 weeks for the face to recover from facelift surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for around 6 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
