A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure which aims to remove excess skin and fat from the mid and lower abdomen, as well as tightening the muscles resulting in a flatter, more contoured appearance to the stomach. A traditional tummy tuck is focused on the front of the abdomen, where excess skin and localised fat is an issue and will involve moving / recreating the belly-button to ensure a natural looking result. There are several variations of the tummy tuck. These include a full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck and an extended tummy tuck.

LEARN MORE ABOUT TUMMY TUCK

The full tummy tuck is the most common type of abdominoplasty and is aimed at people who have good overall health but a significant amount of excess skin on the stomach. During this procedure, an incision will be made (often from hip to hip) and the skin will be stretched downward to tighten and flatten the stomach area. The belly button is effectively suspended on a stalk and a new hole will need to be cut in which the navel will be secured. A mini tummy tuck typically focuses on the area below the navel, and therefore does not require the belly button to be moved. An extended tummy tuck refers to a procedure whereby there is a significant amount of skin to be addressed as well as tightening the tummy muscles. This procedure may also extend to the hips and lower back as well as the midsection. A tummy tuck can also be accompanied by liposuction to assist with fat removal.

At REAL, tummy tuck surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT TUMMY TUCK

There is likely to be temporary numbness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and general discomfort following tummy tuck surgery which can last for a couple of weeks. There will be scarring following your surgery which is likely to fade over time. Other less common risks include; infection, numbness, belly button necrosis, fluid accumulation and bleeding. Your specialist at REAL will furnish you with an appropriate post surgery care pack to aid successful healing.

For approximately 6 week, post surgical garments will be necessary to be worn day and night following tummy tuck surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest for 2-4 weeks following surgery and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for around 8 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
