It is very common for a woman’s breasts to begin to take on a less pert appearance over time. This may be due to a number of reasons, such as; ageing, post-pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss. Breast uplift surgery (mastopexy) can help to lift, reposition and enhance the shape of the breast by raising the position of the nipple and tightening the skin. It is sometimes desirable to increase lost volume to the breast by placing an implant as well as lifting which is known as mastopexy-augmentation. The type of surgery required will be determined following your pre-operative assessment at REAL.

LEARN MORE ABOUT BREAST LIFT

Before your procedure, we will mark the breasts indicating the points of incision. Incisions will usually be made around the nipple, with another running in a vertical line from the base of the breast (where the breast meets the chest) to the nipple. The breast tissue will be reshaped, the nipple will be repositioned to suit the newly elevated breast and any excess skin will be removed before the wound is closed. If an implant is also required to add volume to the breast, then a further incision may be made along the inframammary crease (which creates an inverted T shape), to allow for the implant to be placed.

At REAL, breast lift surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.

QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED ABOUT BREAST LIFT

The most common side effects with breast lift surgery are; swelling, bruising, tenderness and discomfort which can be managed with pain relief. You will also be required to wear a supportive garment post surgery which will aid successful healing. Infrequently a patient may experience bleeding (haematoma), delayed healing and breast asymmetry. The visibility of scarring will vary and will be discussed with your REAL specialist before surgery. We will also advise suitable lifestyle choices that can help promote healing.

You can typically allow between 2-4 weeks to recover from breast lift surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not travel abroad for at least 3 weeks post surgery, and should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for at least 12 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
